It sounds like he's envisioning something that would "track" the things
you wanted - so you would say something like, "I want 20 1x5x6 grey castle
walls", and it'd show up: Troy Cefaretti, 20 grey castle walls.  If I
wanted them too, I'd put in how many I wanted (say 30) and the program
would say that people want 50 walls - Troy wants 20 and I want 30.

I would think that if someone abused this - say, by saying "I want 50,000
sprockets" in an attempt to make sure that TLC makes sprockets for LEGO
Direct - then they would be barred from using the site or something.  Or
maybe TLC will require "preorders" on certain pieces - that way you can
only vote with how much money you are willing to spend.

With the ability to purchase many of a single element directly from TLG in
the not-to-distant future, I had the idea of developing an on-line • database
to track demand for an individual element.

My initial idea was to simply take online requests based on the • colour-type
combination, or element # ideally.  The results of the requests would be
publicly available in HTML format, or Excel/Access/CSV--whatever.
Individuals would have the ability to add, subtract, & modify their • entries.
The site would not be 'secure' in that I don't have SSL, and everything is
in plain text.  However, there is no intention of handling any money or
transactions, just supply data to the web community.  There are many
inherent faults in this concept, but would it be useful?  To TLG?  To the
community?

(...) My understanding is that pre-orders via credit card will be required for all bulk purchases and that LEGO Direct will not do bulk production runs of any element of any type until some minimum threshold is met (in terms of actual money (...) (24 years ago, 18-Apr-00, to lugnet.lego.direct)
