You will have to excuse me in this info gathering process... robotics aren't
really my strong point, and I am simply relaying info from those who know
what they are talking about. I got a few bits of info back:
EEPROM: There is a total of 4k available. We reserve 256 bytes for general,
non-program use (READ-WRITE), such as persistent Spybot information (e.g.
motor setup or a self-controlled data log) and the rest (3.75k) is used for
downloading programs and data (READ-ONLY). There is nothing to be gained by
exchanging the circuit for another circuit with a higher capacity (as one
asks) because access is controlled from ROM.
IR: Yes, a Spybot can send RCX/Scout messages and an RCX 2.0 (possibly also
an RCX 1.x with 2.0 firmware - effective range may be shorter) can send
Spybot messages, just like it can send LEGO Bionicle Manas control messages.
The Spybots use the same 3-channel RC protocol as the LEGO Bionicle Manas
