This is a great question. I have long thought that hobby and model shops
would be a great place to stock the LEGO train line. Especially now that
there are so many different excellent models available.

One large problem these small shops have is limited cash flow. They
can't afford a huge order; even a $1000 minimum (for $1600 or so worth
of stock) is a hard sell, especially since LEGO is an untested product,
as far as these shops are concerned.

I would suggest that if these shops could order LD products in limited
quantities, to sell at retail, they might be willing to try it. Further,
having the trains available somewhere other than the catalog would be a
huge help to potential customers. And it would be a great help to at
train shows, as well, when we repeatedly answer, "Where can I buy LEGO
Trains?"

Unfortunately, the normal LEGO wholesale practice of allowing only case
sales is likely to be prohibitive for these small shops. On the other
hand, I would think that a "Train Shop Starter Order" of $500 (aprox
$800 worth of of stock) could include one of each of the train products,
plus some extra track.

If LEGO Direct could work out a wholesale deal like this for local train
shops, it could really help to get LEGO trains into the public eye. I
know LD is a separate entity from the LEGO retail division, but perhaps
some latitude could be allowed for a special case like this.

Dare we hope?

Dear Lego,

Would it be possible for you to allow small stores (village stores,
educationnal toy stores) to have the possibility to sell everything you have
available in your Shop@Home catalog? In my opinion, your best sets are only
available through S@H. I think it is a shame!

For example the whole train collection, especially the little kits and all
the service packs (especially the rails). And Dan Siskind's house.
I went in a "Lego day organised by a Museum in NS Canada, and most of parent
and kids weren't aware of the train serie, and never heared about the
Sopwith Camel, or even the new MOC house.

How can you expect to sell those sets at large? Or maybe you don't want to?
How would you expect to have better sales by staying with a small common
choice in those chain retail stores?

The little stores can't compete with their prices against the giants (i.e.
Walmart, Costco, Zellers, TRU.)
That would be more than fare to allow them to have an extention variety of
sets not available at the giants.
That way every body would win! You(TLC), US, The little Store!

Can you please give me an answer?

Have a blessed day.

Jean-Marc (I'm not related with any store, Just a collector and passionate)

As far as I remember, this exact question was asked of Brad Justus at the recent BricksWest event. His response indicated that the company was unwilling to allow retailers to "cherry pick" the Lego product line, and thus it was not possible to allow (...)
