Very well stated! My sentiments exactly.
For those of us who have friends or acquaintances at TLG, it is especially
distressing.
Unfortunately this has not been the first turbulence at the Lego company.
- The 1972 transfer of the Samsonite USA Lego license back to TLG meant that a
50,000 square foot factory in Loveland Colorado shut down. It is not known how
many Samsonite workers found work elsewhere.
- The 1986 transfer of the Samsonite of Canada Lego license back to TLG meant
that a Samsonite suitcase factory in Stratford Ontario would no longer make Lego
bricks and sets.
- The 1993 transfer of the Courtauld's Lego license (Britain, Ireland,
Australia, etc) back to TLG meant that the small town of Wrexham Wales lost all
their Lego related jobs.
- The 1990's move of all German Lego operations from Hohenwestedt (in the far
north of Germany near the Danish border) to the southern German city of Munich
(München) probably also caused a lot of grief for the small city of
Hohenwestedt, which had a Lego presence since 1956.
And now the current round of cuts will be especially traumatic for Billund,
where TLG jobs had always been more secure that at other locations... until now.
