I must point out that, at least in Europe, there was a highly competitive

LEGOLAND-parks had large amounts of classic light gray and dark gray elements
in their assortment. A sustantial part of European AFOL's have at least one
location within reasonable distance, and they probably prefered the Pick a
Brick shops because of the following reasons:

* a larger variety of elements available
* prize per weight is more economical as the assortment bags
* one can compose his own optimal mix of elements instead of the fixed
  ratio's in the bags

Heh, if only I lived in Europe!

In the US, there's only the 1 LegoLand, and it's not terribly drive-to-able for
everyone (especially those on the east coast, which I think is more densly
populated). There's also a smattering of Pick-A-Brick shops, however I think
they only have 9 of the 81 part/color combinations offered in the assorted bags.
Heck, I live right near 2 Pick-A-Bricks and I *still* bought a bunch of the
part/color combos. Mostly because I wanted the bricks, but also to show my
support of the older colors. And given that Jake did say 'North America' as well
as Europoe-- I'm not sure there's any Pick-A-Bricks in Canada at all, plus I
don't think they're in driving distance of Carlsbad :)

Anyway, for only a production run of 10,000 per bag, I'm still suprised that
they weren't cleaned out, given that they've had 5 months. How fast did the
inital run of 'limited edition' Santa Fe trains get sold out? Same with the
Maersk ship-- I think these were also 10,000 per set. At least I would have
guessed that ONE of the 6 packs were sold out. Assuming that both US and Europe
got 5,000, it only would've taken 500 AFOLs buying 10 apiece to get them sold
out... And of course we know from Lugnet membership alone that there are over
1800 AFOLs in North America (probably more than twice that, since that's just
AFOLs who have paid to be Lugnet members).

It would be interesting for TLC to compile the figures of classic color sales
through the Pick a Brick shops, and these would be take into consideration
also before someone draws any harsh conclusions. That does't stop me from
feeling a bit sorry for Jake, maybe he didn't expect that classic colors were
available throught the Pick-a-Brick shops on such a large scale.

I'd sure love to think that's the case-- because if not, it would seem to
suggest that:
A) AFOL's don't care about the color change
         or
B) AFOL's don't buy as much as we thought

Perhaps also they didn't sell out because they were only advertised for a short
while on a few fan sites? I know I just assumed that they were sold out-- had I
known (or bothered to check), I probably would've bought more earlier.

(...) Wow, I've read a few very quick and IMHO badly founded conclusions in the answers to this post, so I feel the need to share the wider picture with you. I must point out that, at least in Europe, there was a highly competitive alternative (...) (20 years ago, 28-Aug-04, to lugnet.lego, FTX)
