Some of us in the Club have discussed this and here is what we have determined
is best for us as a club. You may find it of interest or benifet if you and your
Local Lego User Group have simular circumstances.
First and foremost, our name, "New Jersey Adult Fans of Lego".
While we have done shows that have included the public, we have brick for the
public to play with. However, we decided that we are all adults and that we want
to reach out to other adults as the primary focus of our club. So we build with
the bricks provided to help bring the message to people in the age bracket we
want to target; Adults.
That said, we talked about where we could show and where we are likely to show
and it has been determined that our focus is in doing displays. Displays where
we may not be present, but rather leave our models in a static display case or
store front. In addition, as adults with a primary focus on adults, we are not
entirely interested in having "Play Areas" for kids.
We still have a K8 for such occasions. However and again, based on what we feel
is best for the club as well as the partnership we feel with the Lego Company,
through Jake, we are on the same page in terms of getting the word out and
waking up the sleepers. So while open to it, we are not guided by it.
By "it" we mean play areas for kids.
By using the brick we were given to build models for displays and to possibly
inspire others, possibly to the ends of making more friends and having more
members in GardenSLUG is what we decided is best for our club based on our
objectives.
1. Adults
2. Spreading the word
3. Displays
Another concern is simply this, with but a few members, we are not structured to
have a person watch over a "Play Area" or be an "Ambassador" to the public.
We want to meet other people that are adults. New Jersey Adult Fans of Lego.
If your club is likely to do public displays with Kids and play areas, then by
all means, set the Bricks and elements from the kits aside for use in that
manner. If your club has a differnt focus, then do what is best for the club by
concensus.
I act as steward for the clubs Kit and Bricks. The only way a Member gets access
to the bricks is to convince me that the bricks will be used to compliment a MOC
that will be put on display. In other words, sure use some of the Bricks, just
promise to bring the MOC around for a display sometime.
So far any and all bricks used have fullfilled that obligation.
Each Club needs to determine what they are interested in. We determined our goal
is to build and display, as well as have fun. We are grateful for the kits and
bricks. We use them to get the word out, just as in the spirit they were given.
Just as a thought, I offer this:
No one said Event Kit Bricks *have* to be used by kids and the public at shows
and events. What if your club doesn't specialize in that? What if you are a
bunch of AFoL's and you just want to build and show. Use the kits and bricks to
get the word out, don't be bound by them for use by kids and the public if that
is not what your club is into.
Lar, wise in his ways has pointed out in the past that some clubs have policies
to include Junior Members and other limited and supervised means of attendence
and participation by minors. That mostly deals with meetings and show
participation. Of course Public Shows and Events welcome the public at large.
GardenSLUG is composed of adults. Adults that feel more comfortable with the
policies I mentioned above.
To each club their own.
I hope that helps, if it is needed.
Oh, Oh, I ment to say, that as a suggestion, in the future kits, some clubs that
focus on Adult interaction, perhaps the event kits (for those kinds of clubs)
could focus more on things that we could use to better fit our target audience;
adults?
Things like the stickers and bookcovers are cool, but how are we supposed to
give those out to adults?
We came up with this scenareo:
-Hey cool, models.
--Thanks.
-Where can I get sets to make stuff like that-
--Gives long winded explanation
-Wow, that's great, I used to Love Lego and I still have all my old sets
--Cool, perhaps you could send us a picture of something you make, and if you
want to come show it to the other people at a meeting that would be cool.
-Really?
--Ya, we get together once in a while and trade, talk, and build.
-That's really cool.
--Ya, here is a book cover.
-Gee thanks
Kids, might think the "give" aways are cool, but what can we do for the adult
sleeper? What can we give them or use to attract their inate interest?
Some Make and Create Stickers?
Rather than making a complaint, we are merely suggesting that some of the give
aways be something to target adults, for clubs that operate on that level.
Either way, Event Kits Rule! Thank you!
Together we'll wake those sleepers!

P.S. Can someone help me with a proper X-FUT. I'm not sure I set it right.
Thanks in advance.
