My collection is more or less the same. Sorting is not a hell still ;-) but it
starts to be close to this. Usually I build on my bed and need to do cleaning
every time :-( . I have not so  much space to display my MOC (usually I assemble
original LEGO designs once and after that they are sorted for MOC use). So I
display my small MOC only. Nowadays I am trying to create big projects which can
be separated into  few sub-parts.

I usually work on one project at a time; maybe a large spaceship,
castle, or something.   But my mode is usually one project at one.
I have another problem - when I start one big project usually I can not finish
it at once. So I need to put onto the shelf for my next free-time portion.
Sometimes it happens only a week later so my ideas are gone and I dismantle this
unfinished MOC :-( Or start with another one which will be unfinished for some
time too... Small things which I build fast enough I display for few weeks on my
bookshelf. Only very few still survived for few monthes. Specially if they have
rare parts I need for my current project :-| Cannibalization of parts - I am
strong in this!

Currently, that project is a town (multiple structure, but still one
project).   So far it's used maybe 4,000 pieces.
My current projects are three:
a) castle-headquartiers for my Desert-Ocean world (Space-Western-Town parts)
b) huge submarine for my underwater part of the Ocean world (Aquazone-Space
parts)
c) Creating background history for my Lego Universe
First two projects are finished in 10-15%. Third one - some loose files with
generakl ideas... Beside this I create some Desert and underwater vehicles.

So fully 80% of my Lego sits unused!   How terrible!
Your count fits my situation too - sometimes I run out of soem parts having a
lot of another ones even untoushed. I rememeber earlier days when I had may be
only few hundreds of parts - all they were used in my big projercts. But these
days are gone...

Maybe my piece counts are off, but I know the conclusion is right:  at any
one time, the vast vast majority of my pieces are sitting in bins.    I'm
imagining everyone has this problem, but my concience will feel better one
you tell me so.
Don't worry - you are not alone in not-use of your LEGO treasures!

In any case - play well
