it dates to "Year 1"...

I have in my possession three bricks (2 x 4, slotted) with the following
description from the Danish gentleman that sent them to me:

"These come from a set we bought to our daughter in 1949 directly from Lego
as they were not available yet in any shops nearby."

Unfortunately, he didn't send any picture of the box or the rest of the
bricks  - all I have is the three bricks and a story...

Anders, those 1949 era bricks (only 2x2 and 2x4 would have been made that
year)... did not have any LEGO identification on them.

From 1949-52 there was no LEGO logo on the studs, and none on the underside.

From 1952-55 there was no LEGO logo on the studs, but there was the logo in
"block letters" on the underside.

From 1955-56 there was no LEGO logo on the studs, but there was the logo in
"italics letters" on the underside.  This is known as the "dogbone font" with
what looks like a dog bone behind the letters.

Here's a picture of examples of all 3 types:

The first bricks with LEGO on the studs was the 1954 introduced 1x1 round
bricks, and 1x1 round and 2x2/2x4 macaroni bricks introduced in 1955.  Starting
in 1956 more bricks had LEGO on the studs, but old (no LEGO on studs) molds kept
getting used until they were retired.

Cheers,

P.S. Chapter 49 (LEGO Bricks) of my LEGO DVD/download goes into a lot of details
into old 1949-52, 1952-55, 1955-56, 1956-58, 1958-62, and 1962-present LEGO
bricks/logos.
