Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Joe Strout
Suppose, just for the sake of argument, that Brickshelf goes away or stops accepting new uploads. Further suppose that, as a community, we deem it wise to develop something that is decentralized open-source, so that our valued LEGO images and other (...)         Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Wayne McCaul
Oh, that's freakish. I was just thinking that maybe it could work like iPodder or other aggregators. Where you'd upload a simple XML file that contains all the details of your content. Your pics would be hosted on your own site, but there could be a (...) (19 years ago, 7-Jun-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)

Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Joe Strout
(...) Hmm, that's an interesting idea. So basically, your own site would contain your images plus an XML file that provides metadata for them (description, keywords, category, etc.). You'd register the URL of your XML file with the central server (...) (19 years ago, 7-Jun-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)

Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Eric Kingsley
(...) For simplicities sake this type of stuff already exists all that would have to be done is the aggregator part. NELUG uses an open source product called Gallery... (URL) allows our members to host image galleries on NELUG.org... (URL) of this (...) (19 years ago, 8-Jun-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)

Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Joe Strout
(...) quick browsing of the Gallery web site, it looks like v2 doesn't yet support the RSS feed (though some people are working on it). I also note that the RSS feed doesn't seem to include any useful descriptions or keywords. I don't know whether (...) (19 years ago, 8-Jun-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)

Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Eric Kingsley
(...) Well our Gallery installation is "out of the box" so to speek. Unlike the forums and blog software the Gallery is just the standard software and that feed is generated by our site so I guess I don't know what they mean by the fact that it (...)         Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —David Eaton
(...) I definitely like the idea, although I would encourage it to be more generic than "lego-specific". Something that other online groups could use for sharing images, etc., if they so wanted. A couple issues I can think of: - If an owner of an (...) (19 years ago, 7-Jun-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Joe Strout
(...) I suppose, but in that direction lies scope creep, which can kill an open-source project deader than just about anything else. (...) A good point. As for moderation, I was thinking that we could build in a sort of rating system, with the (...) (19 years ago, 7-Jun-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)

Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —David Eaton
(...) Oh, mainly I was thinking in terms of expansion making the network stronger. If it's more generic, other communities will use it, and possibly add features, optimization, and potentially even bandwidth. (...) Hmm... Yeah, if users can (...)          Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Joe Strout
(...) Well, that's a fair point. But it still makes me nervous -- pretty soon you could have people pulling it in several different directions, and morphing it into something that's not really ideal for our purposes anymore. (...)          Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Jeff Szklennik
(...) IGNORE PREVIOUS PANIC- I couldn't upload outside a folder-I went back to check & I successfully uploaded. All this Bshelf going away caused me to not think straight-a great example of how much Brickshelf means. (sorry) Jeff (19 years ago, 8-Jun-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)

Re: Musings on an open-source Brickshelf replacement —Joe Strout
(...) OK, that's interesting. But does it really alleviate the concern, or just shift it to somebody new? I.e., who's running LEGOFan, and how do we know they won't lose interest/fall into a well/join the dark side/etc. years from now, or even next (...)
