Oh, thats freakish. I was just thinking that maybe it could work like
iPodder or other aggregators. Where youd upload a simple XML file that
contains all the details of your content.
Your pics would be hosted on your own site, but there could be a central
site (call it BrickPics) that just shows what feeds have been updated. You
could manually update your own XML file to show youve got new content.
|
Hmm, thats an interesting idea. So basically, your own site would contain
your images plus an XML file that provides metadata for them (description,
keywords, category, etc.). Youd register the URL of your XML file with the
central server just once; it would then check it periodically, and update its
own database accordingly (probably including making thumbnails). So once
youre registered, you just need to upload your images and update your XML
file, and everybody else finds out about it shortly.

For simplicities sake this type of stuff already exists all that would have to
be done is the aggregator part. NELUG uses an open source product called
Gallery...
http://gallery.sourceforge.net/
It allows our members to host image galleries on NELUG.org...
http://www.nelug.org/gallery/
Part of this software includes an RSS XML Feed...
http://www.nelug.org/gallery/rss.php
What would have to be written is a piece of software where people could submit
their feed to and then that software would periodically go out to each feed and
aggregate the data. All the images would be stored elsewhere but writen
properly there is no reason why all the other functionality of Brickshelf
couldnt exist. Just the upload would be independant for each user (or sub set
of users).
Of course moderation would be quite difficult but all the rest is right there.

Maybe the central site would just be links, or thumbnails of only the most
current feeds, like the Brickshelf homepage. But it could be a one-stop
browsing, especially if the content is subdivided into catagories.
|
Right, it wouldnt be too hard to provide searching, browsing, and
recent-stuff views of the data.
|
Again using the XML file I referanced things would still be searchable if the
search function were written well. Browsing wouldnt be a huge problem either
because you would just like to the off-site images instead of linking to hosted
images as Brickshelf does now. Also enough information is in the XML feed to be
able to construct a recent-stuff view as well.
