Getting 4886 today got me thinking... is this the first LEGO building since
the introduction of the minifig to have 4 walls? Nothing jumps out at me
while browing Town sets at Brickset; they all have the back wall open for
the 'hand of God' to place minifigs in them.
A question Gary Istok can no doubt answer...

In the early days of the Minifig the buildings were designed to have four walls
but could be opened. Sets 374 and 376 come to my mind there:
It’s a pity there ain’t minifigs included with the new set 4886. Former Basic
building sets in the 5-year-old and 7-year-old range came with figs, in
particular when the main models included houses.
In this set the house models also are with four walls. It’s not even meant to be
opened. According to the instructions, that is. Of course you can modify the
design to your liking.

Thanks, Jojo, you beat me to the punch. I was going to mention the sets with
the hinge bricks like #376 and also #375/#6075 the Yellow Castle, which also
technically had 4 walls and hinge bricks.
This is a real nice set. The only thing that strikes me as being odd is that
“vent” or whatever is under the leftmost gable. I think that a 1x2x2 black
window would have been ideal there.
That begs the question: Are the black and gray 1x2x2 windows “retired” in those
colors? That recent Lego train Caboose (forgot the number) had 1x2x2 black
airplane windows instead of regular 1x2x2 black windows.
In my own collection I only have 2 of the black 1x2x2 windows (from 70’s-80’s
train sets), and 4 of the gray 1x2x2 windows (from 7740 Intercity Train). I am
afraid to buy more (on Bricklink) because one day the same thing may happen with
them that happened with the steep slope and low slope yellow outside corner
bricks in the last six months, namely they went from being rare $5 pieces (only
found in #375/#6075 or #7740) to being common 60 cent pieces available in bulk
quantities from TLG sources.
I know that there is that “director” at TLG in Billund who controls what colors
parts may be released in, and which colors parts may not be released in. One
day he/she (or their successor) may say “hey lets make black or gray 1x2x2
windows again”. But that time is not at hand just yet, as we can see with this
Designer set.
Just something else to think about...

Sorry Garry, I didn't mean to steal your thunder :-)
#375, though, didn't come with closed roomes. The towers are open at two sides,
as well as the towers in #6080 and #6085 are open at one side and so on.
(I'm a bit embarrassed that #3739 and #4707 didn't come to my mind, me, being a
Castle-lover.)

At least the grey windows are definitely retired as the grey was changed. (And
no, please don't move this post to .color just because of this simple but
inevitable sentence!)

True. For building purposes those pieces have become very lowpriced now.
However, in order to complete an original #375 you still need original yellow
slopes without the additional support beams within (look at this:

own/don't have handy new ones in yellow, but red serves the same purpose)). I'm
not sure if there is anything that distincts old 7740-slopes from new yellow
ones. Maybe there is a part number imprinted/not imprinted or something like
that?
As for 2x2 windows: I'm pretty sure the material of the glass in the frames has
changed. Back then the glass always was somewhat "dirty", even if brand new,
newadays the glass is always crystal clear.
Anyway, small differences like mentioned above won't be of help when buying
parts on BrickLink.

How on Earth did I miss the posts about this set! Totally awesome.
Does it come with an interior? Furniture? Does the roof come off on a tiled
section like it looks like it does? Are there any cool hidden details we can't
see in the picture? Can I have yours? :)

The roof does come off but there's no interior details.

I'd like to add Daniel Siskund's Blacksmith Shop (3739)and both versions of
Hagrid's Hut to the (small) list of 4-walled buildings since the introduction of
the minifig. Those are all fairly recent, so apparently there are some forces
within TLC that are seeking to bring back 4-walled buildings.
WRT 4886 - I can't wait until it's available in NA. This set should be popular
with builders in any theme that uses lots of buildings. I know I was excited the
first time I saw it. With all TLC's talk about getting back to their roots, this
is the first thing they've done that has made me believe that.

Of course, understanding the development process for new sets within LEGO, even
though it's been accelerated recently, if they say last year that they are
returning to classic building roots, we wouldn't see the effects of it until now
with the 2005 sets. Make and Create definitely has been a step in the right
direction, but I'm proud to see sets like 4886 that fully support that move.
I can't wait to get it either!

In that case 376 would also qualify (US 560 IIRC), same hinge system as in
the Blacksmith Shop
