It is hard for me to imagine a good "technical reason" for the change to • so
many parts from the fingered hinges to click hinges so I can only • imagine it
is for patent and intellectual property protection purposes.  IMNSHO the
move to click hinges across the line of hinged elements is much worse • than
the color change is.
Another thing to remember is that the click hinge "clicks" and therefore
means that you can position canopies and whatever else in an "open" • position.
Which is better for "playability"

You can do this with the fingered hinges as well.  Even my older fingered
hinges have enough friction that they will stay in place.  I don't think the
click hinges by themselves are completely bad, what I take exception to is
the replacement of the fingered hinges with click hinges.  Why go through
the effort and expense to redesign these parts with click hinges?

There are several good uses of the click hinges, the original Snow Speeder
comes to mind.  The click hinges held the wings in place nicely at an angle.
However, click hinges aren't without their problems too.  The tiny fingers
on the hinges wear and then the hinges don't hold their position well.  I
built the chameleon from the Wild Things collection and placed it on my desk
where it sat for a while.  Over time the hinges which supported the legs
weakened and they wouldn't hold it up correctly.  I don't have any similar
experience with the friction based fingered hinges although other may.

For vehicle roofs (like may Town vehices have) there is no way you are going
to convince me that a part like this
http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=2349 is better with click
hinges than with fingered hinges.  When it has click hinges opening up the
roof is more apt to separate the hinge base from the rest of the vehicle
than for the roof to open up.  This was true for the back door on the Soccer
bus and remains true for the small fire boat in the current World City
offering.

I'll stop ranting now, I realize I am starting to whine and that isn't very
productive.  But I feel better now.  :-)

Mike
