It is hard for me to imagine a good "technical reason" for the change to so
many parts from the fingered hinges to click hinges so I can only imagine it
is for patent and intellectual property protection purposes.  IMNSHO the
move to click hinges across the line of hinged elements is much worse than
the color change is.
Another thing to remember is that the click hinge "clicks" and therefore
means that you can position canopies and whatever else in an "open" position.
Which is better for "playability"

(...) You could position the old finger-hinges in an "open" position as well. The only big advantage I've found for the click-hinges is that depending on variation of the click hinges that you have (earlier ones had really floppy click-action, and (...) (20 years ago, 16-Jun-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.starwars)
