I wasn’t really counting that promo specifically because it didn’t involve any manufactured plastic parts. Besides, not only was the promo restricted to playing cards, but they were actually produced by Upper Deck, not TLC, so I’m not sure how much they count. I know most AFOLs wouldn’t even count the most recent promo as “LEGO toys” (some still don’t refuse to count the actual BIONICLE sets, for that matter).

Back on topic: the larger Knights’ Kingdom figures are on a par with the Bionicle Toa/Rahkshi/Vahki price point and set count, so that’s not bad. But I see what is meant by the high price for Vladek Encounter, same price for not a lot of stuff. The larger castle sets seem like a better value, with a price per piece about half that of the Encounter.

I did some piece/price comparisons between some of the various themes a few months ago, and the numbers are all across the board. SW sets had the lowest piece-count at some price points and the highest piece-count at others, which doesn’t really mesh with the theory that SW sets are always priced higher due to the licensing fees. The one thing that seems to hold true is that minifigs heavily influence the price structure, with $10 sets in 2003 ranging from 68-120pcs when they included one minifig, and 197-290pcs when they included none. One set even included two minifigs at 37pcs, but it also had a large playmat and the minfigs were the NBA springy-legged variety, so...

The presence of a horse in this KK2 set probably also affected the price a bit. Still, SW had two sets last year that each contained two humanoid minifigs (R2 doesn’t come pre-built, so he doesn’t count), had similar piece counts (39-44) and cost two bucks less (really makes me wonder about that horse now). When you think about it, minifig legs require three pieces be pre-assembled, and minifig torsos require that six pieces be pre-assembled, so it seems logical that they should be priced higher than nine similarly sized bricks because of the increased processing time on what are probably very specialized machines. Still, two years ago the $10 Werewolf Ambush had 110 pieces while it included 3-2/3 minifigs, which doesn’t make any sense compared to the 2003 pricing.

Man, every time I think I’m getting a handle on how minifig sets are priced, I keep finding examples that run completely counter to my theories. Now I’m beginning to wonder if the prices might be directly tied to the size of the box (which could explain why the Spybotics boxes were so pointlessly huge).
