Once upon a time, (on Tue, 15 Jun 1999 16:19:30 GMT, to be precise!), Kevin
Wilson uttered the following profundities....
I am going to be travelling in the UK and Europe during July and on my
travels I will be looking for Lego. If anyone has suggestions about the
best places to look for Lego (cheap/soccer sets/trains/older sets/
service packs) I'd appreciate them very much. I will be in Glasgow,
Birmingham, Nottingham, London, Rome, Naples, possibly Venice or
Florence, Innsbruck, Munich, Jena (in the former E. Germany, was lego
sold there before the reunification with W. Germany?) and Hamburg.

Kevin

UK-Check lugnet.loc.uk as we regularly post there any good
deals found. Put in a request there, also, enquiring about
Glasgow availability. I do believe there is a shop called
Beatties in Glasgow, and they recently had a blow-out sale,
with some good prices on some older sets. (Big Explorien set
for 20 quid (30 dollars), 8299 Technic Sub for 15 quid (24
or so dollars), and a few other Technic sets. A few of these
are still around.

You would be extremely lucky to find anything old in the UK!
Though we are few, the lugnet.loc.uk community has found &
bought up anything/everything worthwhile!

Your best bet, in the London area, is Legoland Windsor for
general sets. They have everything, but rarely a sale, and
nothing older than current catalogues. They also had (not
sure if it is still available) Dacta. There prices are
average. Forget any big London department store, especially
Hamley's, as the are a rip-off. There are a few smaller
chains, such as The Entertainer, and Child's, but there prices
are usually a bit higher than average. I do not know but am
pretty sure there is a Beatties in London. (I will try to
find out for you).

Near Heathrow Airport is a TRU. Availability of sets is just
current range, and prices are average.

Whatever you do, and wherever you are, if you see an Argos, go
in. It is a catalogue shop (They have copies of the catalog.
You look for the item number, fill out a slip, go to pay, then
go to collect it at a counter). They occassionally do 50% sales,
and generally have the best prices for Lego.

One benefit you bloody foreigners :o) get is VAT refunds. (VAT
is our extortionate, 17 1/2% sales tax, included in the
price). I know for a fact that all purchases from LLW, most
TRU's, etc. will qualify, but I doubt you could from Argos.
You will need to ask for a form. You can get it back in cash
(less a small fee) on your departure from the UK.Pretty much
every major store in the London area will have
the forms, and will have a sticker in the window saying as
much.

Any questions at all, feel free to contact me offline, or here,
it doesn't matter. (At least here the information can be shared
by all!)
