Hello Lego fans! Recently, when I got the chance to think about it,
another nagging question came to mind.

What exactly is the most popular Lego theme on Lugnet?

If you could, you can help me out just by replying to this message
and telling me what your favorite theme is. That way, I can finally get
peace of mind, and an answer to that ever- debated question.

I think a definitive answer to this depends on the metric used to measure
popularity... number of theme adherents? Number of posts to the theme group?
"intensity" of adherents (measured by freqency of new MOCs, size of MOCs, or
other metrics)? Regard that the theme is held in by the mundanes?

You can get lots of different answers depending on the metric.

I of course would choose the metrics that make trains come out on top ("size
of MOCs" tends to be won by trains in a walkaway... what other theme
routinely has layouts (put together by many, of course) that are in the
thousands of square feet in size???) but you could easily argue for space or
castle based on posting volume or number of different posters I would think....

Another metric which would put trains on top is "number of people who
take the time to ooh and ahh over creations".

I would have to wonder what is the goal of this survey? I'm not sure
what the value if knowing the current "top" theme by some metric of
popularity. What may be valuable is knowing which themes are
consistently popular. This can easily be answered by looking at the
distribution of Lugnet posts. By this metric, clearly, Castle,
Technic/Robotics, Space/Star Wars, Town, and Train are where the
popularity lies.

To answer the question asked though, my personal favorites are Pirates,
Trains, Castle, and Space. If a single answer must be derived, Trains
would win by most metrics for me even though Pirates is the theme I feel
I am most interested in. Trains definitely wins for me on the amount of
money spent, time put in, and number of MOCs. Pirates does now rank as
the theme I am closest to complete in out of themes older than 1999 (the
re-releases of Wild West sets having knocked Wild West out of the
running of the only such theme I was complete in all regular sets).

I would say Trains and Pirates were equally important in really pulling
me into the hobby, with Castle really close behind. Robotics which got
me out of my dark ages has all but vanished from my radar screen. Space
is the surprise since early on I classified it as the only major theme I
didn't have much interest in, then in two separate incidents, I acquired
a Blacktron Invader and an Ice Planet 2002 Deep Freeze Defender,
probably propelling those two sub-themes into my all time favorite
sub-themes (which would also include Wolfpack and 1980s grey era 12v
Trains).
