To truely see how lego has evolved over the last 20 years compare the

All I can say is: The more things change, the more they stay the same :-)

Ho hoo!  That's it!  That's the set that 6463 reminded me of, but I couldn't
put a mental finger on it.  The prices are interesting to compare, BTW --
this year's 6463 costs $3.99 for 35 pieces (11.4 cents/piece) and 889 from
20 years earlier cost (I -think-) $1.99 for 25 pieces (8 cents/piece).  Is
40% inflation about right for 20 years elapsed time?

Well...I don't know about the inflation rate, but also consider that the newer
set probably has parts that are more expensive to make - the gold-plated dome
thingy and visor [1] for instance.

That said, I think my ideal set would be a combination of the two.  The radar
assembly on the 889 is definitely nicer than the big gold bug-eye, but I'd like
it better if it could rotate.  And while I feel no small amount of nostalgia for
the Classic Space 'figs, I have to admit that the SP astronauts are just darn
spiffy.

[1] - Speaking of that visor...the one on my 'fig doesn't want to close all the
way.  Is this common to all of the Space Port astronauts, or is mine slightly
warped (much like it's owner...)

(...) Well, mine have never closed completely. I have four, which admittably, isn't a large sample of all those out there. :-, Cheers, - jsproat (26 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.general)
