Early 70's Finds

I bought a small box of Lego are a Car Boot Sale yesterday. Amongst the
treasure: 352, 360, 730 and a few more from the same time period. So far I have
only checked the 360, and it is complete. Next I'll be sorting out the 730
which looks really good - and it does have a very odd part:

(...) never managed to work out quite what was going on with it. Now I know where it's from... but can still see little point in it! If memory serves me corectly at the top of the rod there's a hole that looks like it might take something. And the (...) (24 years ago, 14-Aug-00, to lugnet.loc.uk)
