Aha! I've got a couple of those pieces from my uncle's old Lego and I've
never managed to work out quite what was going on with it. Now I know where
it's from... but can still see little point in it!

If memory serves me corectly at the top of the rod there's a hole that looks
like it might take something. And the axle block at the bottom has two
little lumps on the top of it which I though might have something to do with
restricting steering when it's in the long black T-shaped plate... but
looking at the instructions here, that looks unlikely.

Someone once described this part to me as "an axle block with a flagpole on". I've never seen any other than white or black, white being much more common. There are specific reasons for the hole and the lumps. The hole is to allow a 1x2 brick (with (...) (24 years ago, 14-Aug-00, to lugnet.loc.uk)

I bought a small box of Lego are a Car Boot Sale yesterday. Amongst the treasure: 352, 360, 730 and a few more from the same time period. So far I have only checked the 360, and it is complete. Next I'll be sorting out the 730 which looks really (...) (24 years ago, 14-Aug-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.loc.uk)
