Good question and good luck! I like idea books. I have just about all
of them, but even if you don't have them, you can find the scans on the web.
As a kid, I always marveled at idea books, but complained that I didn't have
the necessary pieces - so I had to make due with what pieces I had.
I have found inspiration in every idea book I own, and my most recent
acquisition was the 7777 Train Idea book. That idea book, combined with
Ben's World of ABS (http://www-public.tu-bs.de:8080/~rbeneke/lego), turned
me into an all out train freak, and off I went building all types of trains.
Too bad they don't look as god as many I have seen online, but they keep
getting better.
Trains are a new thing to me though - formerly I have been an avid
Castle builder. I always liked the modularity of the early grey Castle
sets, and so, I normally build smaller structures, with the intention of
adding them to others. As time goes by, the Castle gets huger. Also,
building little carts and wagons, and weapons, comes pretty easily after a
while. Its fun to look at an idea book (like 6000, 250 or 260) to this day,
and get a "new" idea. Since I have a lot of Castle stuff, sometimes I get
the crazy idea to use "Castle" parts for space ships - that particular
hedonism is exemplified in idea book #6000.
Finally, I don't concern myself with colors as I am building - I tend to
think and build in black and white. I can always swap a mismatched brick
after I have built something I like, but I generally use whatever piece fits
while I am working on the "rough draft."
Finally, again, I thought I was done! I did, at one time, try to draw
out plans of things I would like to build, but soon found that to be a PITA.
Perhaps with LDraw or Lego Cad, this might be less frustrating and more
useful, but I haven't had the patience for learning those. It might be fun,
considering the unlimited parts available (well, almost) but I still like
the hands-on approach. To each his own, and...

Have fun!

I read all the different postings and sit back and smile, oft times calling my girlfriend in to see something amusing or to read about someone (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jan-00, to lugnet.general)
