Kevin Loch has graciously agreed to host the JPEG files for the 1999
catalog. Image links at
http://www.lugnet.com/1999/
have been updated to point to the new directories on Kevin's server
www.kl.net, so this should be a mostly-transparent changepoint. The JPEGs
do still exist at the old location for backward compatibility with cached
HTML pages and for future reactiviation someday, but it's best if you try to
access them on Kevin's server because he's set up for unlimited bandwidth on
a dedicated T1 line.
Though the lugnet.com server is connected to an extremely fast Internet
backbone and is capable of spitting out many Gigabytes of data per hour,
bandwidth above a certain level comes at a hefty price under the current
payment plan. Hosting thousands of small JPEG images such as the ones in
the Pause/Lugnet reference guide or in the Fibblesnork LEGO Guide is no
problem, however, since these only add up to a few hundred Megabytes of data
transfers a day and remain relatively constant from one day to the next.
Serving out zillions of custom-generated HTML pages is also no problem since
these typically average only 10Kb and 1/10 to 1/5 second of CPU time.
Anyway, I sure didn't expect there to be 2000 people per day accessing these
1999 catalog images -- pushing the bandwidth out of the hundreds-of-
Megabytes-per-day range and into the Gigabytes-per-day range. And still
no mention of it in rec.arts.sf.starwars.misc, which may drive things even
higher.
So thank Kevin, and if you're curious about the levels of bandwidth required
for these 1999 catalog images, here's a report showing the number of bytes

To me, this is just an insanely huge amount of bandwidth (I'm used to
dealing with smaller files that add up differently). To Kevin, who's used
to dealing with large image files, it's probably a walk on the beach. :)
Someday this level of bandwidth won't pose a problem for lugnet.com. I look
forward to the day when it's affordable to serve up 10 Gigabyte/hour of
data. :)
Again, send your thanks to Kevin for so graciously hosting this data,
because during peak hours these images seem to be chewing up about 25% of a
T1 line.

| I would say you ought to be forwarding all this info to the people at LEGO, whatever contacts you have there. You are essentially providing them with free advertising, and with this info in such hight demand, they'd have to be fools not to consider (...) (26 years ago, 30-Nov-98, to lugnet.general)
