I've gotten tired of filling my recycling containers with large lego
boxes, and it only seems to get worse each year.

I know that part of the reason is for marketing, companies need that
large presence on the shelf to grab the consumers eye, but the amount of
dead space in Lego boxes borders on ludicrous.

At least in the case of PC's the dead space can be justified for air
flow and cooling. When I received the red technic pneumatic studless
truck (http://peeron.com/inv/sets/8438-1), there were two boxes, one
for the truck, one for the back end, with some dead space because they
didnt quite fit the larger box.

With some of the old sets, not only was their less dead space, but it
was better organised. Who here remembers when technic sets came with
some kind of part organisers, with moulded bits for wheels/gears etc?
And when you lifted the flap on the front, instead of more marketing
stuff, you could actually see through a cellophane window what parts
you were going to be getting? That was cool, and often made me drool
for a set, knowing thats what I would get when I bought it.

(...) I hear you, Danny...! Not only technic sets, most of the medium-large sized System sets also had the cellophane window highlighting some of the sets' parts. Unfortunately, they did away with all this cool packaging to save costs. 9 times out (...) (18 years ago, 13-Jul-06, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego)
