My favorite author as a child, John Bellairs, remains one of my favorites to
this day (maybe there are others here who like him as well?) Though I have
not read any of the Harry Potter books, from what I have heard, they are
similar in theme to the books by John Bellairs. Every time I read one of
Bellairs' books, I am amazed by the depth of the characters and the plots
and by the quality of the writing. Mr. Bellairs understood the mind of the
*real* adolescent, could be funny without being corny, and managed to scare
me half to death with the subtle horror in some of his stories. I often
recommend him to people in the bookstore when I see them looking at
Goosebumps or similar series. (by the way, Bellairs' descriptions of spooky
settings inspired a lot of my LEGO building!)
