  Naming of pieces

I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring this up, but... I've noticed that a lot of pieces have been given names which do not allow for the full range of use of the elements. Looking at the inventory of the Sopwith Camel, I found several (...) (23 years ago, 10-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv)

  Re: Naming of pieces

(...) How about just "technic steering wheel large" with the other one becoming "technic steering wheel small"? (23 years ago, 11-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv)

  Re: Naming of pieces

Jonathan and all, I just would like to chime in here and say that I don't think that "small", "medium", "large", "ex-large", etc. are very good descriptions for naming parts. I came across my first plastic space wheels in an Insectoids set several (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv)

(...) Roger that. I've copied lugnet.cad because peeron uses the LDraw nomenclature and that is where you would need to campaign for name changes. I agree, in general that small and large (1) are not good names, I would prefer dimensions given in (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv, lugnet.cad)

  Re: Naming of pieces

My thoughts on part naming: A lot of LDRAW names seem like first attempts that have since been improved on by others elsewhere (Auczilla for example.) I've thought hard about many odd part names and I agree it's not easy to make a good name. A good (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv)

[ Note: I'm crossposting this to lugnet.cad, but with a FUT to lugnet.db.inv so that it doesn't fill up both groups if the thread grows. CAD folks who have an interest in this thread, please come over to db.inv and give your two cents. ] (...) (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv, lugnet.cad)

  Re: Naming of pieces

(...) I'd put this particular piece in as a wing, and the matching brick as a wedge, but the plate-with-panel doesn't really fit in with the panel elements. So is it better to leave these parts all together where they are, or move some of them to (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv)

  Re: Naming of pieces

(...) What's the difference between a wedge and a slope? If you're talking about the brick I think you are, I sort it with slopes. (...) Another thing about that piece - the stud on the side is not really on the side - it's inset a bit. So it (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv)

Sorry to quote so much from previous messages... (...) recap: the parts I'm referring to are: 'this particular piece': (URL) 'matching brick': (URL) 'plate-with-panel': (URL) See them all (along with other similar parts): (URL) (...) Wedges are (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv, lugnet.cad)

"William R Ward" <bill@wards.net> wrote in message news:m28zhwxvqo.fsf@...iew.com... (...) +++ examples and comments snipped +++ I have to agree that a lot of the LDraw part names should be modified. I personally use partsref (and Peeron and (...) (23 years ago, 13-Jul-01, to lugnet.db.inv, lugnet.cad)
