I ran into that problem too, and the solution I came up with looks like this:

7171
Names: Mos Espa Podrace
Inventory: by "John Cromer" <cro@astro.caltech.edu>
Count   Color ---ID---  Description
    1      n/a 7171-sa1  Subassembly box, Anakin's Podracer (7171-sa1)
    1      n/a 7171-sa2  Subassembly box, Gasgano's Podracer (7171-sa2)
    1      n/a 7171-sa3  Subassembly box, Sebulba's Podracer (7171-sa3)
    1      n/a  4129022  Instructions, 4129022

7171-sa1
Names: Anakin's Podracer (Box 4128173-1/3):
Inventory: by "John Cromer" <cro@astro.caltech.edu>
Count   Color ---ID---  Description
    2    black     3020  plate, 2x4
    6    blue    ld3941  brick, 2x2, cylindrical
(etc... lots of lines left out here)

7171-sa2
Names: Gasgano's Podracer (Box:  4128174-2/3):
Inventory: by "John Cromer" <cro@astro.caltech.edu>
Count   Color ---ID---  Description
    4    black     3700  beam, 1x2
(etc... lots of lines left out here)

and so on... you get the idea.

I consider the "sub-box" to be a "component" of the complete set. The sub-box
gets its own inventory, and the software that handles the data can combine the
sub-boxes into a single inventory or not, at its choosing.

By the say, the "sa" in "7171-sa1" stands for "subassembly", a term used in the
administration of assembly-line manufacturing. John Cromer did the inventory
for set 7171 and provided the box numbers including the "1/3", "2/3", etc.

I didn't need to add any fields to my database format. My software just scans
through the data file (a plain text file!) for a line that consists of the
desired set number; then all following lines until the first blank line are
part of the inventory for that set.

I have a quick question on how to inventory set 8277, the Giant
Model Set.  Since the set contains a sub-box should the pieces in this
box be inventoried seperately from the rest of the box?  If so, what
should designate these pieces as still coming from set 8277 but from a
sub-box. [...]
