LUGNET isn't hosted _on_ pair.com, LUGNET is running on a dedicated
server all by itself and its network connectivity is _provided_ by
pair.com. I'd wager Todd pays a fair bit more than $29.95 per month
(especially if you consider the cost of the server, whether he bought
it outright or is leasing it) to operate LUGNET.
For $29.95 you will get virtual hosting of your domain name (it's
actually $28.95 for the account a $1 for that) and you will be one of
many (not tons, just more than a few) sites hosted on one of pair's
dozens of freebsd servers. I can't really imagine you taxing the
server bandwidth-wise unless you plan on letting people upload HUGE
graphic images, then you'll have to start worrying about daily
bandwidth limitations and charges for going over that.
If you're going to get a pair account you want to try to time it for
hitting one of their N x discounts specials. Right now, during
February, they are offering double discounts, meaning if you prepay
for a year you get a 16% discount off everything - setup fees, monthly
fees, etc. I got tripe discount in January but that's unusual. At
16% off you'd be paying $337 for an entire year to host one domain
there. I paid $307 with 24% off.
