I wouldn't go so far as to say anime is crap. In fact some of it is quite good.
But, like it or not, this is the look kids like right now and I don't blame LEGO
for trying to play up to that. Anything that makes LEGO sell is, in my opinion,
a Good Thing(tm).

As I pointed out earlier, realism is typically not a factor when kids determine
if something is cool. In other words, if you want a realistic looking model,
build it yourself. No one is forcing you to build the model as shown. In fact,
most AFOLs buy set for parts so the set's look is a moot point.
