They announced the voting here on Lugnet, so I don't see it as a big problem.
They've announced plenty of other Lego Direct items at BrickFest and
BricksWest, afterall.

Why should it be "fair"? Business rarely is, and besides, most of those who
voted probably don't even know about BrickFest, and wouldn't notice there was a
winner until it was announced on Lego.com. Announcing the winner at Brickfest
would generate more goodwill than bad feelings, so if they are ready to
announce it by Brickfest (which they may not be), then there really is no
reason not to.
