I know at least one example of such use, in Leça do Balio, Northern
Portugal. The church is not too big, but very sturdy-looking with massive
stone walls and few, narrow windows. The tower acted as a watchtower for the
surrounding countryside, back in the time of the "Reconquista", and later
served the local baron in times of conflict.
For other examples, Irish monasteries/abbeys will probably help.
