Don't get me wrong. Story based is exactly what I have in mind.

The Siggraph movie is exactly what you see it is, showcases of models.
Specifically, they are a collection of animations that are showcases. No
attempt to tell a story is made. To compare it to story based animations does
it a huge injustice. As a showcase, it is very impressive. Heck, my purpose of
the animation wasn't to showcase Legos, the models, or raytracing! I was using
it as an example of what Xgrid can do. It just so happens to be an excellent
example of both amateur super computing and Lego models and ray tracing! ;)

I think you are confusing our effort to make tools and the showcase vs story
design.
The PCS Dogfight is actually a very small part of a larger story. We intended
to have a large story with much much more, but it took SO long just to get the
models in the right spot, to get the camera right, to get the movements right.
You would not believe how much time I spent just placing everything. I don't
have POV-Ray animation tools, I edit everything in a text file. I have to
picture it in my mind, and then I have to render it to see if I was close to
what I was imagining. 99% of the time I wasn't. Right now the PCS Dogfight
animation is only barely acceptable compared to what I really wanted. I just
know it is "good enough", so I released it. And people like it, so I wasn't
entirely wrong about it being "good enough".
The reason I want LDraw based animation tools is to make the process quicker.
With LDraw animation tools we can quickly place the camera, lights, and the
models. No guesswork. Then we can spend our time where it matters developing a
story. The walking and such is also just a convenience.
I could, of course, convert all of this LDraw to Blender or Maya. But I don't
want to.
As a side note, here is an example of a mini story (should be familiar to
everyone). Note the minifig facial expressions. This is barely touching the
surface of the possibilities.
