I don't envy you your task. The only other photos that made me wonder whether
they were real or renderings were of the Royal Train.

And I believe those were actual photos that were then digitally cleaned up.

Hi Rick and others,

After reading your post, I took the challenge to make a render as realistic as
the above mentioned picture. I took a standard LEGO engine from the 7xxx serie
and placed it on a 9V track.

If you look close to the Royal Train picture you'll notice that there is no
horizon or edge visible in the background, so the train must be standing on a
floor that "curves" into a wall.
I created this in MLcad by placing a quarter of a cylinder in the back and
enlarged it and placed my own floor by drawing a polygon. (as you look close at
my render you'll see a small white triangle where the cylinder ends, D'oh!)

Another thing is, is that the shadow on the floor tells us that the light is
coming from above and slightly behind the train. BUT on the chimney of the
engine is also some highlighting, so there must be another lightsource left from
the camera.
This was fairly easy to do, just enter the correct global-coordinates in L3PAO.
I made the light above the train "normal" and the one left of the camera
"shadowless".

The "final" render is done with radiosity and I think the result is not bad at
all. Minor point are the blue refection in one of the windows and the colour of
the track which is a bit to dark IMO and there is almost no shadow of the
enigine on the floor, so the light should be placed a bit further away.
Other give-aways are the rubber tube which shows segments in the steep curve,
the noise in the door-windows (some "bug" in the LGEO-file) and the rubber bands
on the wheels are not perfectly round.

Please take a look and give both positive and/or negative feedback:

(...) Well, first you'll need to stop working with the lighting to bring out as much detail as possible from the black brick. Real photos are usually slightly muddy. Also, you'll need to add some digital dust to your model, and make the surfaces (...) (21 years ago, 11-Jun-03, to lugnet.cad.ray)
