For consistancy across all building instructions and consistancy with • LEGO's
style, I much perfer the using the level (or depth) as the determinant for
construction image background, part image background, part annotation font
(axle lengths and such), part count anotation font controls, instead of • the
possibility for unique controls on a sub-model by sub-model basis.

This makes a lot of sense to me.  I spent a lot of time looking at some more
complex LEGO instructions when I was working on instructions that had sub
models and sub-sub models.  I came to the conclusion that LEGO typically
uses a light yellow color for the first sub model or what I have always
referred to as "call outs".  The second level tends to be a redish color.  I
don't believe I have gone any deeper than that.

I am going to pull out some instructions today and take a look. This is
quite interesting.

The only thing that this standardization doesn't take into account is
overall page layout. If you have a redish background image your instructions
are being placed on, then redish sub-model callouts might not be the
smartest design choice.

That being said, if the option is there to either use the coloring (each
level = different color) or not use the coloring (each submodel is rendered
against white), then I'm happy. Sure it would be nice to be able to adjust
the preferences, but if it requires huge amounts of programming, I'll get
over it.

To date I have rendered with LD-Lite because it is easy to specify what
background color you want the generated image to include (it is a command
line argument).  My solution to date with LPub is to go back and change the
background color  (the 0,0 pixel) to my desired color using ImageMagick with
a script.

If LPub could do this automatically it would be a very welcome feature.

Absolutely. The less post processing, the better!
