Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp) —Jeremy H. Sproat
(...) I personally don't use these tools. Thus, I would be unlikely to want to download them if I were surfing via modem. Hmmm... I might be muddling things. My point is this: Let the main archive, parts updates, and separate tools be available (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

DOS Makelist (was Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)) —Steve Bliss
(...) Umm, that would be really great if you did that. We never came up with a replacement for James' original makelist.exe (which can only handle 1000 parts). How big would a distributable of your Perl-makelist be? And how easy would it be for (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: DOS Makelist (was Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)) —Jeremy H. Sproat
(...) Why the limitation on 1000 parts? Have all the makelist implementations shelled out to call sort.exe? I'm sure there's a quicksort call in the ANSI C libraries, and stl has some great capabilities for those of the C++ persuasion... (...) Well, (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: DOS Makelist (was Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp)) —Steve Bliss
(...) I'd guess the limitation is because James allocated a 1000-element array to hold the data lines. The problem I ran into when I tried a rewrite was I was using a shareware version of Basic, which wouldn't support the memory usage I needed, so I (...)         Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp) —Steve Bliss
(...) Just to create some facts & data to work from, I created zip files containing various parts of the whole LDraw family. Here's what I got: Original LDraw and all parts: 2.1MB +DOS tools: 2.3MB +Win32 tools: 4.8MB (not including L3PAO & its (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

(...) I agree. (1) (...) You've done this before, haven't you? Man, what a headache. :-P This is why I don't write the install code at work. I have learned one thing: avoid avoid avoid InstallShield! How do you like the Wise install tool? Would it (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp) —Steve Bliss
(...) I like Wise very much. I don't *think* I've used InstallShield, maybe I tried once. Anyway, I know I don't want to try it. I've mostly used Wise to package VB apps, but it works really well, and very easily. With the new version, I just point (...) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp) —Benoit Cerrina
By the way I took a look of what takes that much space in ldao and it happens that it is mostly the vb6 virtual machine and the comctl.ocx. Since those are already correctly installed in the system of all those who used the previous install you (...) (25 years ago, 17-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Uber-install (was Re: Organizing the Site Revamp) —Steve Bliss
(...) Yep. I'm still (when I have time) playing with this in Wise. Steve (25 years ago, 17-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Organizing the Site Revamp) —Bram Lambrecht
(...) Which DOS tools are these? I don't remember any being particularly large... (...) Same for this... LDAO is 2.something Mb, right? What's the rest? --Bram Bram Lambrecht / o o \ BramL@juno.com ---...---oooo-----(_...o---...--- WWW: (URL) (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: Organizing the Site Revamp) —Jasper Janssen
(...) It's Ldraw _+_ the dos tools. so the dos tools are 200k (...) same for this - 2.3 meg ldraw 'n' stuff, rest LDAO. Jasper (25 years ago, 11-Feb-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)
