Yep, here's a few reasons:
If .ldr is the standard file, people will mentally associate the editors -
MLCad, LeoCAD, BrikDraw3D - viewers LDView, L3Lab - as 'editors of the LDraw
file format' - which will then allow them to easily mentally associate with the
URL, www.ldraw.org.
LDraw is the name of the program that started it all - a little preservation of
history as we move away from James' original programs.
I don't think I know of any other program that uses that extension.
