i have a suggestion for patterned baseplates e.g. the roadplates. how about
taking each plate and making a subpart with the studs and baseplate itself,
just missing toe top surface and then have the main part reference that
subpart. then any patterened parts can also reference that subpart.

That's a good general suggestion for patterned parts.  Some parts are
already set up this way -- the minifig torsos are one example.

I don't think there are any baseplates where there is more than one
patterned element for any one basic element, so there's not much point to
making this change.

If we had a roadplate where there 5 different printings to go with the
plain baseplate (we reasonably expect that people will eventually model the
5 printings), it might be worthwhile.

The 7-stud curved-road baseplate is the only candidate I can think for this
treatment.  It has at least 3 different printings: the roadplate, the
desert dirt-road plate, and the river plate.

9-stud Straight Road Plate:
--Green w/Airport Runway
--Gray w/Road & Crosswalk
--Gray w/Road, no Crosswalk

7-stud Straight Road Plate:
--Green w/Airport Runway, 16 Stud width
--Green w/Airport Runway, 18 Stud width
--Gray w/Road & Sidewalk
--Green w/Race Start Markings

9-stud Straight 3-Lane Road Plate:
--Gray w/Pitstop
--Gray w/3 Lanes & Crosswalk

7-stud Straight Road Plate w/ Median:
--Green w/Crosswalk
--Gray w/Crosswalk
--Gray w/Road & Sidewalk
--Gray w/9-stud Compatible Curb Lines
--Green w/River

9-stud T-Road Plates:
--Gray w/Road & 2 Crosswalks
--Green w/Airport Runway
--Gray w/Space Runway
--Black w/Space Runway

7-stud T-Road Plates:
--Gray w/Road & 2 Crosswalks
--Green w/Airport Runway, 16 Stud width
--Green w/Airport Runway, 18 Stud width

9-stud Curved Road Plates:
--Gray w/Road

7-stud Curved Road Plates:
--Gray w/Road
--Gray w/River
--Beige w/River
--Beige w/Dirt Road

9-stud Crossroad Plates:
--Gray w/Road & 4 Crosswalks

9-stud Circle Road Plates:
--Gray w/Space Landing Circle
--Green w/Airport Runway Circle
--Black w/Space Landing Octagon

7-stud Crossroad Plates:
--Gray w/Road & 4 Crosswalks
--Green w/Airport Runway Circle, 16 Stud [Runway]width
--Green w/Airport Runway Circle, 18 Stud [Runway]width

9-stud 3 Parking Spaces Plate:
--Gray w/Helipad
--Gray w/2 Parking Numbers
--Gray w/(Caution?) Lines

9-stud Driveway:
--Green w/Gray Driveway
--Green w/Paving Stones
--Gray w/White Curb Lines
--Light Green w/Paving Stones

This is almost all the Road plates I could think of (except the 8-stud plates,
because there is only one of each of those I believe).  As you can see, all
Plates but the 9-stud cross- and curved roads have multiple incarnations.  I
thought about including raised plates, but I figured I made my point.  ;)

P.S.  I would probably use most of these if I had them available.  ;)

P.P.S  If I've missed any, please let me know.  :)

If you have all these parts, and you want LDraw part-files for them, I'd be willing to work on making the files. Scan at 64dpi (that's 'life size' for LDraw), and e-mail them to me. Steve (...) (25 years ago, 16-Apr-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)
