I appear to have answered my own question, though I don't understand the
answer :) It seems that if the part is located in the LDRAW\MODELS
directory, the extended face problem exists. If the part is moved into
LDRAW\PARTS, however, the problem disappears. Perhaps this is some subtlety
in the way that the models directory is handled?
