Thank for the info. I called it a "Crusader's" shield because Set Reference for model 1491 listed it as under Lego > System > Castle > Crusaders. (...) Yes, this end part can be connected to any eight diameter rod, just as you can with a proper, real life pneumatic tube. There is a problem with the part number 32296. This number has been given to the double bevel gear 20 teeth in the official update 2000-02, but this number appears on the Silver champion tyre.
