It is always wise to make a backup of the your original files.
1. In the case of the Paulo's DAT to DXF converter, I don't think that
the original file is altered.
2. Inlining with LDAO _does_ alter the original file, but the altered
file is LDraw compatible. Back up anyway.
3. Using MPD, you manually join all the files together. And MPD can
be used to automatically split them back apart into files.
4. L3P does not alter the original dat file.
