You don't have to work from scratch; there are several versions around on the
web of a LDraw import plugin for Blender. Here's the one that I use:

Speaking of a steep learning curve, I've found that once you've imported your
model, you should select everything and hit Ctrl-A. This will "apply" the
scaling and rotations that the plugin has done. Otherwise, goofy things can
happen.
