You could try experimenting with Unity3D. This is a free download.
It looks like the Unity suite of tools was used to create the online game Lego
game "The Quest for R2-D2"

There are some tutorials on how to create characters with joints/bones in
Cinema4D and then import them into Unity. This may give you an idea of how this
kind of thing works.

Anton Raves created a minifig animation here (I'm guessing this was a POV-Ray
