(...) Maybe -first of all- we need a good definition of "dithering": Your left image shows no dithering at all. Maarten, My mosaics are more than just a dithering of the 5 grayscale lego colors. In MLCAD, using a dithering of the 5 colors, I create a palette of 9 colors that I feel tricks the eye into seeing more shades, and therefore a clearer image. Here's (...) My mosaic is really hanging (it doesn't fall apart thanks to the frame), so I can easily lift it off the "hooks" and take it with me. If you have no intention at all (...) To create my (URL) Level 42 mosaic> I used the Floyd-Steinberg dithering algorythm: This algorythm was originally written to convert images to black & white (NO grayscale) to reduce filesize. Darn, I thought the great EH was going to comment on my mosaics. Alas. ;) I've been tinkering with my technique and I think my latest one VASTLY outdoes my others. Heh, normally I keep quiet when Pixelego gets mentioned and such, but given that one of the sample images from the original post was of Winona Ryder (and one of my favorite WR pics, at that), I felt I'd throw out a few samples from Pixelego for (...) (22 years ago, 4-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

(...) Isn't that just using the "studs-up" technique instead of "studs forward"? IIRC I think the Lugnet Mosaic Maker does that too-- unless maybe you're talking about a more advanced dithering algorithm? IIRC Eric Harshbarger's PixeLego program had (...) A year ago I saw the large Mona Lisa LEGO mosaic in person. I really wanted to be able to create something like that... without printing out an image and creating a LEGO mosaic pixel for stud.
