Heh, normally I keep quiet when Pixelego gets mentioned and such, but
given that one of the sample images from the original post was of Winona
Ryder (and one of my favorite WR pics, at that), I felt I'd throw out a
few samples from Pixelego for further comparison:

http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/winona/

There are all directly saved from Pixelego (not pics of built mosaics).
I took the same image and knocked it to B&W and adjusted the contrast
and brightness in Photoshop before using Pixelego.

I saved out six combinations (15" wide): Studs Out, Studs Up, and SNOT
(tiles required)... each orientation with diffusion turned on and off.

The original pic is in color, but I did not do any samples using color
LEGO bricks.

Nothing really more to add... I just thought I'd contribute a bit here.

Cheers,

eric

PS: oh, and there was some irony to the fact that I had to go out on the
web and SEARCH for that particular picture of Winona. 6+ years ago when
I maintained her official website I coulda gotten that pic in 2 seconds
(and even told you what magazine it was from and the photographer  --
Dec 94 Harper's Bazaar, photog: the late Patrick Demarchier, I think)...
but alas, those days are long past [grin].

Isn't that just using the "studs-up" technique instead of "studs forward"? IIRC
I think the Lugnet Mosaic Maker does that too-- unless maybe you're talking
about a more advanced dithering algorithm? IIRC Eric Harshbarger's PixeLego
program had some dither techniques that were a bit better than Lugnet's (That is
to say I remember Todd being impressed by them), if only PixeLego was still
around :) I've never actually looked at dither alg's myself, but I'd certainly
be interested hearing more!
