While this is not my primary area of building, I have noticed that the rubber
tracks that came with the Cybermaster kits are relatively long and have
sufficient grip to at least clear some obstacles. The downside of this is,
that the rubber tracks create significantly more friction that the motor(s)
have to overcome. Using anything but the "power" motors is certainly a no-go,
but even then you will want some transmission to increase power -
unfortunately decreasing top speed at the same rate.

I own a set of these, and would happily say they are a bit oversize
for this chaps requirement. I have tried to use them in robot builds
myself, and have generally gone back to using six wheels after having
traction problems, and watching increasing complexity when I tried to
use suspensions and multiple idlers to get better contact.

Its cheeky, but there is always the option taken by a number of
military toy makers. That is to make the tracks move, but have some
proper wheels concealed in the vehical for the real traction. For the
size here - maybe the technic pulley wheel is about right, there is a
band/tyre for it as well.

(...) Danny, in theory you are right, however this solution won't help much in rough terrain, as the idea of incorporating track with the vehicle is to be able to move forward when there is no such thing as a flat surface. What this calls for is the (...) (18 years ago, 5-Jul-06, to lugnet.build.military)
