List Version 2

I am sure that there are still mistakes but I promised to make a cleaner version of my list…

1. Adrian Drake http://www.brickfrenzy.com/?m=ironmecha

Wonderful use of colors, removing almost all of the studs has worked fabulously for the model! The cockpit must have been really hard to fit in that small space but you made it look almost easy! The pure white cannon and the large open space in the back and the elegant concealment of the joints make the mecha stand out… (lol, am I glad I am making this post, there are so many details I have missed the first time I looked over it!)

At may come as a surprise, but I would have liked to see the whole flight idea expanded a bit more. Perhaps a module that separates and reattaches for flight that can be either stationary or act independently…

2. Allister McLaren http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1597675

The original concept is still very much there and boy if this is an official entry am I really glad I am not judging this contest, especially since it doesn’t have different categories! Absolutely great work on the model!

3. Brian Cooper http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=161285

From all the mechas, this one has to be one that is closest to the image. It is almost scary how the lego has been molded to match the contest image. The only problem I see with that is, I hate the starting picture. All of the mechs entered in this competition reflect the builder, but I feel that the starting picture simply got the better of the builder this time. The “Bandolero “ attacks the lack of personality in this mech directly but even so I would like to see a Dark Iron Mecha that deviates from the starting parameters a bit but able to stand its ground against a Gundam in a battle.

4. Brian Pilati http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=161375

Is there a page with the finished model? The completed pieces look extremely well! Clean design like Adrian’s with a chain system in the leg for fast movement on clear ground. It’s great to see the two different versions of the torso, and I see the missile bay actually fires a projectile, that’s great! I would love to see the full model.

5. Bryce McGlone http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=163708

I love the approach to this mech, the image is a starting point, the rest is the builder speaking! The colors remind me of Quetzalcoatl. The off-center torso makes the model come up to life! And imbedded cannons, ha ha, I have always wanted to incorporate pirate cannons in a mobile suit but it could never make it look well. I guess the only thing I don’t love about this are the lack of rear view images and the joining of the cannon to the lower part of the right arm (for some reason I keep wanting to imagine it with spikes or a counter weight).

6. Captain-Canada (real name?) http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=166094

Another Iron Mecha pair. I am not sure why the builder decided not to enter them into the contest though? Sure, the larger of the two can have more articulation / detail but this is goes to the “elitnes” issue. If it was good enough to post on brickshelf then it’s definitely good enough to enter the competition!

7. Christopher Snead http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1573920

Compression of worm gear set up for a smaller mecha is something I simply gave up on a few years back. I love the images that I see here, please don’t take them off brickshelf anytime soon, I love the way this is starting. I believe I have most of the pieces you used, once I get my bricks back I might try to copy the starting frame…

8. Dave Johann http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=163458

Ok, so I love anything that is organic looking and this model is no different. I disagree with some of the element exaggeration and the entire cannon mount but this is one of the entries that appeals most to me. Great work! I hope to see more soon!

9. Derek Schin http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=161419

I don’t know much about microscale, but is that a blacktron booster!? That’s just awesome. I would like to see an extra joint in the legs which will elongate them and give the set more agility. This mecha looks good enough to be licensed by Lego for one of their mass produced mini’s!

10. Eric Sophie http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=162750

I love the creativity in this set: system and technic seats as armor, car doors as side plates. Etc! I was really excited to see how creatively some peaces are used in this model. I feel however that this mecha suffers from “contest rigidity syndrome”. Eric is the one to say best but I feel like you tried to limit yourself so you can stay within the designated picture. I really like how you added wheels to the legs but one month was really a short time for this contest so it must have been very hard to balance out weight vs. range of motion in 3 weeks.

11. Fradel D. Gonzales http://www.flickr.com/photos/35774347@N00/83245650/in/photostream/

There are only 2 images so its hard to comment, but the back (which few people have bothered taking a picture of) looks very clean! This is something that I would expect to see in mass production swarming over bases, at a very slow speed. The colors, weapons and image deviations I think are right on the mark, but the legs make the mech look slow…

13. Hafhead (name?) http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1606967

Another great microscale Iron Mecha. This one can give all other micro a run for their money if there is a separate micro category.

14. JustinRamsden http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1604936

Likes: Looks rigid, stable, play friendly, something that can actually be turned into a mass production set.

Dislikes: This brings another possible category separation: “best can be played with mecha”. Nearly all of the design I have seen are wonderful, but how many of them can actually be used to play with without worrying that the added pieces for decoration or even the whole thing won’t come apart? It’s almost impossible to compare a mecha for play with a mecha designed for looks? The legs are a bit too large for the torso but that is an issue with the original picture and I prefer it to returning the torso to its larger version.

15. Ka-On Lee, Kolee http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=166167

Impressive torso! It is not a copy of the image but this torso design delivers a very strong “mobile doll” impact and different configurations to boot too! Great mecha that seems military practical, even if not too elegant due to its shorter legs.

16. Keith Goldman http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1592501

I remember seeing this before and I am not sure it was build for this contest but I see nothing wrong with the mech as to not comment on it. I have to say I like this design better than the original picture and it fits the entire setting nicely! I particularly like how it has a sleek shape, looks fast and agile while at the same time carries a great pay load (though it can be adapted for non-military purposes).

17. Kyle Vrieze, Freze http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=165871

I know that people have commented on this one already so I will just say that I impressed at how clean the design is. Also that pilot must be really happy for he has one of the larges cockpits for a mech this size I have ever seen!

18. Leigh Holcombe ,worker201, http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=164992

Very fierce mech for its size. I like the uni-color design and the added details from all directions. The model seems to scream “I am coming for you!” As a con, it seems to me it can’t actually move much. The left arm is great; it’s actually so great the right arm has a hard time competing with it. I have only began working with the newer joints so I have no clue how to get a shoulder armor over it without destroying the articulation, but I hope to start working on that issue soon. I like how you sacrificed some mobility in the legs but achieved a much cleaner shape in return, a very interesting choice. I hope to see more mechs from you!

19. Mandalore http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=161802

Not sure if this was meant for the contest, but if it was then congrats for simplifying the original mecha to its essentials: cockpit, 4 legs and lots of cannons. Everything else really is impractical (though fun to look at).

20. Marco Tagliaferri , Tagl http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1604794

This mecha is very similar to the way I approach building so without any reservation I have to say its one of my favorite Iron Mecha. Good attention to detail and lots of things that open and move. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1604794 is just precious!

21. Mark Stafford, Nabii http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=164942

I would call this a “Heavyarm” The colors flow nicely while the whole mech looks light and agile which adds to the effect of the large hand/missile launcher. I really wish that it could extend forward (think Robocop 2 bad guy main left arm), but that would be a bit impractical! Normally I would say that I dislike the amount of joints left without protection but considering the role and type of the model it does not seem to matter.

22. Matthew Evans http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=160815 and http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/13738

As far as colors go, the white-red version of this quadra with the added blue of the cannon and the dark joints is the cleanest best executed color management! The high articulation is a bonus too. Cons: parts of the torso and the left side look a bit too rigid compared to the rest of the mech, but that may have been done on purpose?

23. Megan Rothrock, Megs http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=164996

There is no way for me not to love this one!!! Flower power attack! Original part use, one of the best cannon designs, and most of all, fun and humorous (though I really don’t know how I would feel if the Empire used these in the battle of Hoth, hmmm… lets not go there)!!!

24. Michael Dallaston http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=105609

Another great looking mecha that has not been inhibited by the starting image. Great colors, balanced well crafted cannon, sturdy and most of all, has a personality (although it’s enemies should not expect much mercy from the pilot of a mech like this). Being a star wars freak I will not even touch the logos and the R2 unit.

25. Nathan Proudlove http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=164792

First impression: Mech Warrior meets a slimmer quadraped. I am not familiar with the builder but the Iron Mech looks great and the right cannon is exquisite. I had no idea that carefully selected gears can give such a nice barrel effect!

26. Paul Cook http://members.lycos.co.uk/legoville/lego/lego06/ironmecha01.html By Bryce: Nice clean slopey goodness. Love the minifig pilot and the “crouching” stance.

By me: Ultra clean and simple. I had no idea that such a great look can be achieved without using a large number of small pieces.

27. Peter Blencowe, Oranges http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=166046

If you notice, the back extends very far back producing a very interesting shape when looked from above. This is something that I though A LOT more people will do because the huge leg mount allows for large misbalance in the torso. I would really like to see a larger version of this mecha.

28. philosophe07 (name?) http://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=166735

As much as I hate technic exterior, this looks really sweet! I never imagined I will see an Ice Planet red visor used for a hinge cover!!! This has to be the third or fourth surprising piece in a mech this contest. If the judges have a most unusual piece use category I bet that it will go to this mobile armor.

29. Sam Pagel http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=162237

30. Jude Beaudin, ShiningBlade http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=166082

I saw someone commenting on this earlier and I really do not understand what the builder was going after, however, thumbs up for making it different.

31. Jeff Ranjo , THRAXISjr http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1606011

By far one of my favorite Iron Mechas! Great use of parts, uniformly colored with sharply contrasting yellow, mini fig ultra friendly, great spread out attention to detail, has character while it does not defy any physics laws. Sure, it doesn’t have much armor, but that actually makes it even cooler! Great work!

32. Timothy Gould http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=160646

Being a Mech Warrior Fan when I first saw this mech I fell in love with it. Having the cockpit be on the left arm is an incredibly practical choice since the 4 leg design can handle the shifts in center of mass. This is actually the main problem with some of the military versions. There are these huge bulky legs that are supporting a relatively small and for the most part symmetrical body! This mecha preserves most elements of the original picture, utilizes the advantages of the design and is non-military. I give it two thumbs up!

33. Tony Alexander, tw0nst3r http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=161635

I believe this is only a brainstorm but there are a few things that I find interesting: green as a primary color and separation of torso into functional pieces! Deviates from the starting pic but not a bad start.

34. Tuomas “TheQ” Kukkamaa http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=160938

This has to be one of the scariest mechs I have seen in a looooong time! Even though it’s small it still looks like its coming out from one of your biggest nightmares! Obviously the original concept is all but gone but since there are no financial prizes I think it is much better to have fun with your bricks and this must have been fun to make!

Have a fun filled day!

Bobby
