When the LMHoF was created back in August 2001, the Founders wanted to
present a fan created resource and archive honoring Mecha design.
At the time, building Lego Mecha designs was in its infancy.
So when you wanted to see the few designs that did exist at the time, you had
to go all over the web to see them. We wanted to have a central location where
people could both see various ways to build Mecha and honor the brave who made
them.
At the time the idea was being kicked about, the people who were:
A. Friendly
B. Active Mecha Builders
C. Active LUGNET users
D. Active web publishers, ie... web, or Brickshelf.
E. No one hit wonders A builder had to have proven themsleves with more
than just one design.
....were all asked to either become a Founder, or were inducted in to the
LMHoF as a Member via email requests.
We had some simple criteria.
1. Do it ourselves with permission from the builders.
2. Keep our identities secret.
3. Keep an eye out accross the web for Mecha Designs.
4. A simple voting process conducted in a remote forum.
We kept our identities secret for many reasons.
Mostly because we did not want to hear a buch of flack from people and avoid
all the second guessing that comes along with a public arena.
We cared more about the designs and honoring the people who made them.
Most of us wanted to excersize our freedom to create the hall and ask
permission from the inducted Members to display their Mecha designs free from
the hassle of many different opinions, nay sayers, and negative feedback. As
well as the Meeeee toooo Factor.
It was tough.
We made mistakes on spelling, timelyness and we got our share of people who
have nothing better to do than to attack us.
What a shame to have people fake questions about the LMHoF to our email contact
just to slip in a virus.
In all this time, I have answered many many requests and had to turn down
many many more. We then adopted a policy of we come to you.
If you built a Mech, posted it to the Web, we were watching.
I remember a message from a young person, who built a Bionicle MOC.
It was cool, it had about 20 parts total.
The young builder wanted to inquire about membership. I had to compare the
likes of the MOC to that of the ones in the hall. As nice and as cool as it
was, the MOC was clearly very basic and a slight variation of an existing Toa.
I had to politely turn the builder down, but with out actually saying NO.
I instead encouraged the builder to continue to create and that we would be
watching. This angered the young builder and he replied:
....if I would have known that you guys only accepted Gundams in the Hall of
Fame, I would have built one!!!!!.....
The LMHoF encompasess all Lego Mecha Designs. Bionicle Tech included.
Another person, who shall remain nameless, engaged in a lengthy email battle
argueing with us as to why we would not tell him who we were. In the end we
decided to respect the builders accomplishments, even if he had no respect for
what we were trying to do.
I personnally have nothing to hide and am quite proud of my involvment.
The others rather not have to answer questions and like it annyonmous.
So you have to respect that and their wishes were abidded by.
That is to say that the people who got together to create the LMHoF were
accomplished Mecha Builders and we used our own standards, commitment to
excellence and inovation as a guide and bench mark when considering new designs
and inductees.
We trusted our collective judgment and respected eachothers abilities.
We stand by our decisions.
Recently, my life has changed, and changed, and changed again.
No one has any qualms with my commitment to the genre.
I just could not bare the burden alone, so the LMHoF sat and is in need
of a revival.
Last year an effort was begun to create a flashy new website.
I also interviewed two new Founders. One of them was helping to build the new
website when circumstances beyond his control, forced him to opt out.
We were in a slump again. I even secured an interview with Mecha Extrodinaire
Master Gla that was to published and debuted on the new site. I was honored to
have correspondance with such a great Mecha Builder. I still owe it to
him/her/it to publish the interview as well as make it available to the
community. Expect this to happen. I promise
In moving forward, I just want to say I am very proud of our efforts.
We made something. Something that never existed before. Something everyone
could use, learn from and maybe draw inspriation to one day join our ranks. Or
just have some place to see cool stuff.
Now there are just a few things I must say. These are not easy things to say,
but they are the truth.
The old Founders have all but gone away.
Some are dormant, some have moved on, some lurk. Some are living great
adventures elsewhere in life. These things happen. A couple just simply dont
want to be involved anymore. Hey fine. We are not married and I wish all the
best to those in their personnal pursuits. The LMHoF will always be there to
greet you when you return.
To those who say the LMHoF is elitest, your missing the point.
I ask you, to what level of excellence should people be held for induction.
The whole point to having a Hall of Fame is to exemplify excellence and
inovation. The standards should be somewhat high. Or we risk just having a big
Mecha Club. Something we wanted to avoid.
Lastly, I wanted to mention that the way into the LMHoF is not easy.
Thats why its a hall of fame. On the same side of the coin, it is something
to shoot towards, not to shoot for. There is a difference. Build Mech because
you like too, not because you want in. When done with your heart, a sense of
excellence, and the glimpse of what is possible that fire or spark will light
the way in.
Now, I really want to go and keep working on the current Mech Im building.
So I leave you with this:
What do you think of the Lego Mecha Hall of Fame?
Has it helped you?
What would you like to see happen?
In all honesty, being a Founder has given me a great sense of pride.
If you have questions or concerns, comments good or bad, please keep in mind
what I wrote above. Things happened the way they did and there is no going
back, just moving forward.
I have a mental note and a folder on my Moms hard drive of those I will be
casting my vote for. The LMHoF will live again.
(ha ha No Mom joke intended)
Also, the LMHoF was created out of a love for the genre and the appreciation of
the building that goes in to making Lego Robot designs. No amount of
compliments or complaining will ever change that.
Comments are very welcome, complaints will be filed accordingly.
