(...) Use more light sources, all the same "temperature" (don't mix halogen, flourescent and incadescent), from different angles, and diffuse it. (...) Just one light? Try using three...all from different directions, and none pointing in exactly the same direction as the camera. The funny thing is I'm not using a flash and I'm using a "painter's light" essentially halogen with a white diffuser to simulate sunlight, it just doesn't work with black lego in this case (perhaps vertical plates are more shiny than bricks).
