(Sorry if any of this sounds long-winded or "speechy" or anything.  Just
pent-up after reading from work without email for several weeks.)  :]

Hi all, popping my head in for a moment.  My current job has me
commuting to work for eons and staying with my GF most evenings, so I
haven't been building much, but I have been working on getting photos up
from my last building spree a couple of months ago.
I can't comment individually, but...GREAT WORK you all are doing.  I've
really enjoyed looking at all the excellent stuff everyone's been
building, and some of it even makes me wonder if I still rate.  ;]
Seriously though, I think as a sub-community of AFOLs, we've grown so
much in the last three or four years.  I remember when we didn't have
enough material to fill a website, and now we even have our own group on
LUGnet.  Kudos.
On the issue of credit:  I appreciate when credit is given, and always
give credit on the rare occasions I borrow something.  Of course, that
doesn't account for parallel ideation or convergent evolution or
whatever you want to call it, I know it happens...Take the airplane for
example.
The credit issue is one of degree I suppose.  I don't mind very much
when someone just uses a leg design that I did over three years ago,
it's out there, kind of public domain.  On the other hand, a few weeks
ago when I surfed across an almost perfect black replica of my F-86
Starsaber without a single mention of my name...that was very
disconcerting. Use your best judgement I guess.
On design:  There seems to be a bit of confusion on some people's parts
about how a mecha should look...Personally, I like that everybody builds
them differently.  If everyone built one style of mecha, it'd get kinda
boring in here.  I like to build conservative, clean-lined mecha like
that of the original Macross type.  But that doesn't mean I don't also
appreciate the "Extreme" anime style of today with tons of spiky things
sticking out everywhere, or the boxy "post-Harmony Gold" FASA style
mecha. I like it all, so let's try to encourage talented newbies to
build in their own style, not tell them to fit in to one of ours.  :]
CAD vs. real LEGO:  I envy those with computers fast enough to use CAD
or patient enough to work without a mouse (I use a 486/DX50.)  I do
admire a RL model much more though.  Not only is there the psychology of
knowing you could actually touch it and whoosh it, but it's more
impressive a feat when you can make a model look good without having
theoretical parts that have never been produced, such as trans-blue 2x3
inverse slopes, etc.  Then again, if I get a new computer and/or they
come up with a good mouse-driven CAD program for LEGO, I'm there.
Megabloks:  Have you seen the Legends Blok Bots or whatever they're
called?  They're the ones that come with a humanoid mecha and a "beast"
mecha.  IMO, they are 6x10^24 times cooler than anything "mecha" that
LEGO has attempted.  *sigh*  If they would only switch to ABS and cut
their QC mold tolerances by a few microns, I think LEGO would go under.
Finally, to all the new guys:  Welcome, sorry I missed you on the way
in!  I've been lurking around your stuff and it's wizard!  (Oh, you know
where I heard that first? Not Star Wars.  It was one of my favorite
movies, CHITTY-CHITTY BANG BANG!  Seriously!)
Thanks for listening everybody, and sorry this was so long winded.
Take care. :]

(...) Since you brought it up, do you mind if I ask a few questions? I'm curious about which CAD programs you've tried on your 486. MLCAD and LeoCad support the mouse. Are they too slow on the 486, or is the problem a lack or screen space or colors? (...) (23 years ago, 23-Aug-01, to lugnet.build.mecha)

Colin, What's up? It's good to know you're still here. I too have enjoyed seeing this group grow over the 2 years I've been here. You will always be one of the Original Mecha Builders. (that's OMB kids. Our new mecha catch phrase). Thanks for (...) (23 years ago, 24-Aug-01, to lugnet.build.mecha)
