I guess I’m not as bothered as some people at the idea of “mutilated” LEGO. I mean, don’t think of it as a mutilated LEGO head that has become useless, think of it as two LEGO half-heads--a new specialty part previously unavailable. And who doesn’t need some LEGO big toes and thumbs? Actually, my earliest “mutilation” of LEGO (a space helmet into Yahweh’s hair) yielded Adam’s rib from the chinstrap. And that was pretty cool.

Well, in truth this is something I’ve always struggled with (sort of like the struggle to reconcile an all-powerful, all-loving god that is spiteful enough to submit people to an eternity of endless torture) but here’s my latest musings.

I actually don’t zealously object to mutilation for purely decorative purposes (another example would be Rob’s brick-lighting technology). It’s when a brick is modified in order to make a creation structurally sound or--even worse--allows something to be built that would be impossible otherwise that I disapprove. And I don’t have any problem at all with cutting Lego string or flex tube; it’s often cut to different lengths for official sets, so we’re just following in the footsteps there. And of course, the scarcity of a piece influences how hard I wince when I see it desecrated; a common head, no problem...one of those white hairpieces, however, would be sacrilegious.

Thanks, Derek. Good to hear from you. It’s been a while.

Yeah, that would be because I just got back from a lengthy stay in Russia. About all I can say is that if you’re looking for cheap knock-off Lego, forget Southeast Asia and head for the former Soviet Union. Imagine semi-classic sets from the mid-nineties that look identical to the real thing, but instead of the word “System” in the corner it says “Brick.” I wish I were kidding.
