I, too, buy LEGO sets for the parts, but I normally build the main model
anyway. If it's a small model, I try to build it without looking at the
instructions. When the model is built, I tear it down again almost
immediately and sort the pieces into my parts bins.
I've only once build an alternate model to a set (8459) but I was
disappointed at it, as it wasn't as good as I thought.
I think that most LEGO sets are very well designed, and build the
original sets when I buy them for the inspiration (and fun!).

| I'm the first to admit that I buy LEGO sets just for the parts. I never actually build the model in the instruction booklet. Until a recent post by Ralph Hempel about the 8226 Mud Masher that sent me on a bit of a building rampage. The Mud Masher (...) (25 years ago, 12-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)
