I almost invariably build the model first.  There is typically something there
that gives me a neat idea, or a springboard for similar ideas, and so forth.

The only exceptions to date are when I buy multiples of a set, and one other:
3038 Spyder Slayer.  I got halfway through the main models, and stopped,
because it really stunk.

Depending on the model, it may stay on display for a long time, it may come
apart in a matter of minutes.  My only Guarded Inn has been on display for over
a year now, but it's the only thing to survive that long on the shelf.  (A
close second is the Skull Eye's Schooner I got my wife for our last
anniversary)

Our models get displayed on a plain old bookcase, in front of the books.  About
once a month or so, I wander past and give them a couple shots of canned air to
keep the dust off. :)

I usually only build the models in the instruction books and then leave them on
display. Every so often, I may move them around, or take them apart for
"storage", but I haven't built a model from scratch since I was 10 or so (I'm
22 now). Unfortunately, I don't have much of anything resembling an
imagination. I just like the way a bunch of little plastic pieces can be made
into all these different things! Plus, that happy little 'click' that somebody
mentioned earlier is the neatest thing! :)
